Thesis - V for Vendetta and Children of Men

V for Vendetta (VfV) and Children of Men (CoM) are two different films with many similarities. Both the films have a disaster that we as the audience don't know how it started. In VfV they try and get across he message of warning to the views but in CoM it's a sense of hope. With VfV being a Classic Hollywood Narrative, it follows some of the general conventions of a typical Hollywood film, but then can't at the end gets the viewer thinking about what just happened. This never happens in a typical Hollywood film but that is what VfV is trying to get across. CoM being an independent film, the way it is shot is very different from how VfV was shot this independent film would be trying to make the film more realistic by trying to get it's style of shot across.

CoM Narrative

Thesis - your analysis of the comparison
Similarity:V
Birth and mothers
Terrorism

CoM:
Birth
Infertility
Terrorism

CoM EDR:
Equilibrium- coffee shop
Disruption - Kee is pregnant
Resolution - Kee with her kid on a boat (cliffhanger)

Difference -
Spiritual birth vs actually birth
V=hero? Gives life for the people BUT was for revenge not for the people
Theo=hero? Gives life for humanity so life moves on
Typical hero stereotypes V would be it
But Theo is there to show a sense of realism because more people are like Theo. Why? To show a message of hope

V is a message of warning
CoM is a message of hope       Difference

POV shots to put the audience in the film, make it realistic. The director is used this in most of his films to try and get the sense of realism.

Fatherly figures are Jasper in CoM and Dietrich in V

V for Vendetta:

-Villain is the army/Government
-Dispatcher is Evey when V saves her and invites her to the destruction of the old bailey
-Evey in the first part as the typical woman would be the helper to V
-Evey again would be the princess because in the first part she needs saving and protecting
-the donor in this would be V and could be Dietrich for both helping Evey when she needed help
-V would be the hero for many people in VfV because he stands up for the people and takes down the Government but blowing up Parliament. But he is this way due to him wanting vengeance for the Government

Children of Men:

-Villain is the Government
-The dispatcher would be Julian for the original offering but could be Kee as well because she gives Theo the meaning for doing it
-The helper would be Jasper because he gives Theo and everyone a place to stay and be safe
-Kee would be seen as the princess of the film due to the fact she needs protecting throughout and being rescued from Government
-The donor in CoM could be Jasper, he gives Theo the place to stay and gives him a car to escape
-Finally the hero would be Theo because he is there to help and sacrifice to send hope for the new generation

Character Driven Motivations:

V for Vendetta is trying to get across the sense of realism. Not as simplistic as people want it to be. V's motivation is revenge on Government but ends up being the hero for the people of London. Good vs Bad

Children of Men is more complicated than VfV. We can't tell who would be the villain and hero because some of the characters are more likely to have more than one motivation. With infertility when someone comes up pregnant like Kee, it's gives the meaning of hope to the characters of the film.

The character of Sid in Chilren of Men is an important character due to him having a change in moods towards the Theo and Kee. Once he sees the baby he then takes it into his own hands and acts like most of humanity would probably do by trying to take the baby and use it as a tool go get what he wants.

Children of Men and V for Vendetta Comparative Essay

Now both films Children of Men and V for Vendetta are dystopian based. Both set in the near future with a corrupted Government who run everything. Although both films have a different drive mind, Children of Men focuses on the infertility of women and how it affects the society. In V for Vendetta it shows how a corrupt Government run by a dictator can abuse the power over there people, and then have the people stand for what is right.

Obviously the first similarity we can get from the two films is that they are both dystopian futures set in London, and that are both under control from there Government who want to make England a better, purer country. Both films have the same intentions for all the homosexuals, jews and any religions, they all want them gone but they do it in there own way. By making this in the near future it could be trying to send warning symbols to the viewers. That if this happens, if the country goes into the dictatorship state then we will be overrun by the power of the Government and forced to follow more rules. But still in Children of Men it was a natural case, the film never explained how it got into that state. And in V for Vendetta it was a biological war starting with the Government and turning people with them.

Another similarity of the two is the theme of revolution. To get the messages across both films have to have a violent uprising to achieve there freedom. In V for Vendetta it was the peoples uprising from there homes to go and stand beside V who was there to be the leader of the revolution for the people. Although his actions may have been seen as heroic and peaceful protest at the start, when V decided to blow up the House of Parliament it was then seen as violent protest. But all this was still for one thing and one thing only, freedom, which there achieved once the buildings were gone, and the country could start  rebuilding again. Like in Children of Men the film also had a violent uprising to get the points across but there was no question being answered as to how this war started. None the less the revolution was still to over come the fear of Government.

A difference between the two films would be that they have different drive point, they have a different way of reaching the goal. For Children of Men there main focus was infertility, that is what all the character are sparring towards. As the problem is unexplained it is very hard to determine any other possible themes between both films. The drive point for V for Vendetta is when the protagonist (V) is searching for revenge, but his revenge is seen as heroic and that is when the people stand with him to start a new beginning.

Overall the two films Children of Men and V for Vendetta have many similarities in there style and there layout of themes. There only main difference though is there final drive point.

Conclusion

Conclusion

V for Vendetta's sides of the war are V vs the Government. V can be seen as a terrorist or a freedom fighting so it's hard to choose a side. In Children of Men the war is between the rebels and the army. Any other film we would choose the rebels but in this case the rebels aren't the good people we think they always are in other films. The baby in the film could be seen as a Jesus figure with a sense of rebirth and hope for everyone
